The Science of Laminar Flow: What Cardiac MRI Is Revealing and How DurAVR is Restoring

The imaging cohort consisted of 60 baseline MRI examinations, 46 six-month follow-up studies,

and 39 paired baseline and follow-up datasets, while the control population included 35

subjects. All imaging analyses were performed by an independent MRI core laboratory to ensure

standardized interpretation. Investigators evaluated multiple advanced measures of aortic

flow physiology, including indexed aortic flow displacement, flow reversal ratio, flow rotation

(helicity), and comprehensive assessments of left ventricular structure, function, and mass.

These sophisticated MRI techniques were selected to quantify the degree to which prosthetic

valve implantation restores central laminar flow and minimizes abnormal flow eccentricity and

vortex formation throughout the ascending aorta. According to the investigators, currently

available valve replacement technologies generally fail to fully restore native physiologic

laminar flow, whereas the initial DurAVR imaging results suggested normalization of flow

patterns toward those observed in healthy control subjects without aortic valve disease. The

conclusion is that DurAVR restores forward and central physiologic flow post implant as the

indexed systolic flow reversal ratio (FRR) and indexed systolic flow displacement (FD) were

reduced to similar levels as measured in the matched control group.

One of the most important new findings involved the relationship between valve

hemodynamics, flow restoration, and ventricular remodeling. Investigators reported that
