LVMH: Louis Vuitton's Entry Price Opportunity

Soft-luxury mega-brands are struggling to engage with middle-class consumers.

Higher inflation in the USA, slower growth in China, and uncertainties in Europe have

sapped confidence and brought consumers on the back foot. High post-pandemic price

increases compound an already difficult situation. A developing K-shaped economy and

increasing consumer polarization has weakened the “luxury goods consumer mass”.

Price and mix adjustments have become critical – even at the top of the brand

pecking order. Chanel’s creative success with Mathieu Blazy has taken centre stage,

but behind a wave of newness and desirability hide mix adjustments: accidentally or on

purpose, the new Chanel smooth bags cost less than the classic matelassé products. Raw

LFL price cuts have become an option for those sailing closer to the wind (Gucci) but risk

coming at the expense of long-term brand equity if not followed by newness (see Global

So far, Louis Vuitton has appeared reluctant to adjust entry prices. The LV entry

price for full-sized bags is currently at €1,550. LVMH has consistently delivered through

a strategy of upward reinvention (see Louis Vuitton and Gucci: A Tale of Two Giants: 1) Louis

Vuitton: Reaping the Benefit of Upward Re-invention). It takes a cultural effort from LVMH to

step back from this approach. Too much success at entry prices also comes with the risk of

increased visibility, something a big brand like LV wants to avoid like the plague (see Global

Luxury Goods - Selling Exclusivity by the Million).

Instead, Louis Vuitton has focused on injecting more value into its products: with

reversible bags, with extra pouches or wallets (the Neverfull), or with new materials (SilkTech). In theory, this would address ‘value for money’ concerns. But in practice, with an

average selling price of ~€2.2k this still leaves Louis Vuitton out of reach of a significant
