Not a month to hang your hat on, but should we extrapolate?
CITI'S TAKE
Weak month (PIF and margins) from Progressive in an otherwise solid
quarter. The challenge with monthly results is the vacuum created by lags
with benchmarks we might use to validate whether variances are noise or Buy
signal. With respect to the underlying loss ratio this month (up 610 bps vs. Price (14 Jul 26 16:00) US$226.58
520E bps), we would like to see non-cat flood and miles statistics before
Target price US$261.00reacting (since this is normally a seasonally-weaker month, and we have
seen noise before). We note that YTD rate decreases total ~300 bps which, Expected share price return 15.2%
in a relatively flat PIF month, explains any premium/policy decline almost Expected dividend yield 4.9%
entirely. We are encouraged by higher G&A, which should benefit retention
Expected total return 20.0%and new business on a lagged basis. We are adjusting EPS estimates
modestly to reflect changes to PIF and G&A (negative) and NII positive. The Market Cap US$131,915M
changes are not material enough to change our price target. See Figures 1–
26 for quarterly statistics.
Pondering severity vs. frequency — The real question in our minds is whether this Price Performance
month is frequency or severity driven (which is why miles driven and non-cat loss (RIC: PGR.N, BB: PGR US)
activity are of import). On one hand, inflation data for some auto categories last
month ticked up, which could raise concerns of severity. What is unusual in our view
is that current-year calendar adjustments to the loss ratio remain positive (including
