Following our Texas power field trip last (link), a few ERCOT power traders

and former Texas regulators raised a concern about data center and

crypto voltage management in Texas with the upcoming large load

buildout as another potential issue. In this note, we discuss ERCOT’s plan

ERCOT Moving Beyond Registration and Studies: In our view, NOGRR282

represents a notable evolution in ERCOT’s approach to large-load oversight. Previous

initiatives focused on registration requirements, telemetry, and interconnection

studies. NOGRR282 goes a step further by establishing mandatory ride-through

standards that govern how future large computational loads electrically perform

during grid disturbances.

Reliability Focused Proposal: ERCOT argues the rule is necessary to prevent large

data centers from simultaneously tripping offline during transmission disturbances,

which could contribute to frequency instability and broader reliability concerns as

large-load penetration increases. ERCOT has cited numerous historical load-loss

events and continues to highlight growing large-load requests across the ERCOT
