Environment Daido Steel’s core business is the production of specialty steel in electric-arc furnaces

that use steel scrap as the main raw material. Through these operations, the company

plays a role in protecting the environment and realizing a recycling-oriented society.

Aiming to contribute to a recycling-oriented society, the company recycles steel scrap

and sells roadbed materials made from slag produced during the specialty steel

manufacturing process. Daido Steel is also engaged in the water treatment and water

purification business through the manufacturing and sale of sewage sludge

carbonization treatment systems and other products. In addition, it develops and sells

electric arc furnaces with a rotating drive for the furnace body, which helps save

energy by increasing thermal conductivity during the steel production process. As the

company uses electric furnaces for steel production, its CO2 emissions are 25% of

those from blast furnaces. It aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% in FY30 versus the

FY13 level, and expects 13ppt of this reduction to come from energy conservation and

another 37ppt from the use of renewable energy. In FY24, CO2 emissions declined by

30% versus the FY13 level.

Aware of the need for corporate activities to fulfill its social responsibilities, Daido Social

Steel carries out activities to protect the natural environment of Lake Kutcharo, where

it owns surrounding land. The company also focuses on its relations with local

communities and holds an annual firefly viewing event at its Hoshizaki Plant. In

January 2022, it expressed support for the Japan Business Federation’s goal of

having women account for at least 30% of executives by 2030.
