BoJ MPM Review: Falls short of hawkish market
expectations
The BoJ kept its policy rate on hold at today's meeting, as had been widely
expected. Also within the range of expectations, hawkish Board Member Hajime
Takata cast a dissenting vote against the hold, arguing that "the Bank needs to
adopt a nimble approach in response to upside risks to prices caused by demand
shocks stemming from overseas developments and to changes in overseas
financial conditions" and advocating for a rate hike. As we noted in our preview,
had two rate hike proposals been submitted markets could have interpreted this as
the BoJ laying the groundwork for an earlier hike. The fact that only one proposal
was submitted makes this a broadly neutral outcome.
