Kumamoto Prefecture and the surrounding areas on 28 July, and we hope for your safety

and for the swift recovery and reconstruction of the region.

None of the companies we cover in the steel, nonferrous metals, wire & cable sector have

large production bases in Kumamoto Prefecture. Therefore, even if equipment were to be

damaged, we think the direct impact on companies' overall earnings would be minor.

Several companies do, however, have small production bases or offices in the area.

Osaka Steel [5449] (Not rated), a listed subsidiary of Nippon Steel [5401] (Buy), has a

production base in Uto, Kumamoto Prefecture. At the case of the 2016 Kumamoto

earthquake, it took just under one month from the earthquake for it to resume product

shipments, and just under three months to restore steelmaking facilities. Osaka Steel

booked ¥1.6bn in extraordinary losses related to the disaster in 17/3, and the impact on

recurring profits was around ¥700mn.
