Same-store sales at Cosmos Pharmaceutical up 1.2%
Cosmos Pharmaceutical [3349]: July same-store sales
• Cosmos Pharmaceutical's July same-store sales rose 1.2% y-y.
• Sales of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics look to have risen sharply, and sales of food
products and sundries appear to have risen too. While sales growth seems to have
been somewhat lackluster, it appears that this was partly because cool weather in
early July acted as a headwind. In addition, rice sales look to have fallen y-y. Although
some stores were forced to close as a result of the Kumamoto earthquake (as of
12:00 JST on 6 August, seven stores in Kumamoto Prefecture remained closed), we
think the impact of the earthquake on overall sales was minimal. We also do not see
any major changes in pricing policy. We recommend the stock with a Buy rating as we
think the company will be able to continue to capture consumer demand while
leveraging its strengths in low prices, and focus on medium-term growth prospects
based on store openings.
