Oil Monitor - President Trump announces renewed Iranian blockade and a 20%

safety and security reimbursement on SoH flows

The negotiation surrounding the interpretation of Point 5 of the US/Iran

Memorandum of Understating (per BBC, 17-June-2026: Iran will “make

arrangements using its best efforts” to allow safe passage of commercial vessels

through the SoH) has escalated to military confrontation in recent days. On

Monday morning, the situation escalated further, with President Trump

announcing, via Truth Social, the re-imposition of the Iranian blockade and a 20%

US reimbursement for the “safety and security” of shipping of “all cargo” through

the SoH (Reuters, 13-July-2026). We will likely see a rise in the probability of

military escalation in the region in the near term but expect in our base case that

this will fall short of mutual energy and public infrastructure destruction.
