materials procurement, Jahyun Koo, said the systems for pricing Australian coking

coal were being distorted by a small number of transactions that inflate prices, and it

was time for the industry to collaborate on a new model. Koo’s manifesto for

change, published in Monday’s edition of The Australian Financial Review, echoes

some of the concerns shared at a recent meeting between miners, traders,

steelmakers and price reporting agencies, where the effectiveness of the indexes

that provide benchmark daily coal prices was scrutinized… Writing in The Australian

Financial Review, Koo said the price indices were too volatile because they gave too

much weight to small, individual trades. “We have observed instances where a

single, high-priced, spot purchase by a trader … disproportionately inflates the daily

ALUMINUM. China’s Controversial Aluminum Wire Exports Double in

June. “China’s exports of stranded aluminum wire almost doubled in June, as

traders continued to ship the controversial product to fill a supply shortfall caused

by the conflict in the Middle East.
