Inditex has overnight announced that Beatriz Padin, head of Zara Woman, is retiring after >40 years at the company. This is a big deal as

Ms. Padin has been instrumental to Zara’s success over the last 30+ years and she is one of the cultural foundations of the business. She

has worked at Inditex since the age of 17 and has been head of Zara Woman since 2001 (by our estimates, c. 60%+ Zara revenue). She has

helped the company navigate lots of challenges including the shift to online and the acceleration of product cycles. She is often cited as a

key mentor to Marta Ortega and the real boss of Zara, potentially being the 3rd most important person in the company (after Chairperson &

CEO). She is often quoted in the Man From Zara book (our book review here) and worked very closely with Amancio Ortega. In the book, she

lays out the fundamentals of the culture at Inditex, which are listed in our note. Her legacy will go down in the annals of Inditex history as one

of the driving forces of the Inditex culture and its success.

She is being replaced by Alfredo Ferro, another Inditex lifer, who has been in charge of Zara Woman Basics (one of the three internal

divisions) since 2013 and has been at the company for c. 30 years. This is a continuity internal appointment and reflects the importance

and uniqueness of their culture (which is the biggest factor of their success).
