ABI: Business conditions worsened at architecture firms in May (AIA, 24 June

2026)

The AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index indicates a deterioration in business

conditions in May 2026, with the headline index remaining at its lowest level since

January, reflecting broader economic softness. This weakness is attributed to

geopolitical uncertainty, including the Iran conflict, alongside higher gas prices and

inflation, which have led clients to delay or pause new projects.

Demand indicators also softened, with the inquiries index slipping below 50 for the

first time in four months and the value of newly signed design contracts falling to

its lowest level since January, pointing to a weaker near-term pipeline.

Geographically, conditions weakened across all regions, with the South remaining

closest to growth, while the West saw a notable deterioration after earlier

resilience. By sector, billings declined across all specializations, with multifamily

residential losing recent momentum, and institutional segments continuing to

weaken despite brief growth earlier in the year.
