Equity Markets Positioning Model: Positioning Rebuild Gains Traction, but Downside Risks Rise on Stretched Pockets

Equity Markets Positioning Model

22 June 2026 Citi Research

Current Themes

Equity markets reacted positively as the US and Iran reached an agreement for a

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a roadmap to de-escalation, which sent oil

prices sharply lower. In parallel, the AI supercycle continues to offer a supportive

backdrop for investors. However, for the US, recent euphoria was tempered by

accelerating inflation concerns and a surprisingly hawkish stance at the Fed. (US

Economics - FOMC – Hawkish shift as 9 of 18 want to hike).

While markets continued to edge higher, equity positioning across US large cap

indices remained relatively stable with a mix of offsetting flows across both the

S&P 500 (+1.8) and Nasdaq (+3.9) limiting overall changes. Net notional levels for

the S&P stood at USD 42bn, while Nasdaq notional levels declined marginally to

+39bn. On a normalised basis, positioning across both indices were near

unchanged from offsetting activity (Figure 1). ETF flow positioning for the S&P

(+4.4) and Nasdaq (+4.6) portrayed a similar trend, but normalised positioning

levels here have been considerably more extended in recent weeks.

Signs of broader participation continued to gather momentum, with small caps

(Russell 2000) positioning rising from a combination of new risk flows and covering

activity. Current normalised levels for Russell 2000 (+2.9) are just shy of extended

levels (Figure 2), and the positioning surge (+2.4 to +2.9) represents the largest

weekly increase across all US indices.
