On 12 June we hosted a seminar about next-generation amorphous motor cores given by

Next Core Technologies. On 19 March Denso [6902] (Suspended) announced an

investment in Next Core Technologies aimed at joint development in the area of electric

motor cores using iron-based amorphous alloys, which are key to improving the

competitiveness of next-generation motor generators.

Generally speaking, amorphous alloys have much lower energy losses than electrical

steel sheet (less than one-tenth of equivalent losses), giving them an advantage in being

able to make motors smaller, but their thin and hard material properties present

challenges in terms of blanking processes and increasing the stacking factor. However,

Next Core Technologies has successfully used its proprietary alloy formation design

technologies to develop amorphous alloys that are thicker than conventional amorphous

alloys and that can also help improve performance as motor core materials. Motor cores

based on electrical steel sheet use heat-resistant magnets, which are made with rare

earth metals, and are thus exposed to geopolitical risks. Amorphous alloys are expected

to improve energy efficiency, which should result in less heat generation too, and this
