Samiran ChakrabortyTaiwan life insurers’ hedging ratios continued to trend lower in 1Q’26, alongside a

further build-up in FX volatility reserves, reflecting the structural shift in hedging Xiangrong Yu

behavior following previous accounting rules changes and new FX volatility reserve

regime. The expansion of FX volatility reserve has effectively enhanced life insurers’ Adrienne Lui

capacity to internalize FX volatility, thereby reducing the need for costly external

hedging instruments and accelerating the decline in hedge ratios. Josh Williamson

Wei Zheng KitWhile the enlarged FX volatility reserve acts as a buffer against FX movements, its

capacity is not unlimited relative to the scale of insurer’s foreign asset exposure, Helmi Arman

which remains significantly larger than the reserve pool. In a sharp TWD appreciation

scenario, the reserve could be drawn down rapidly, raising the risk of reserve Jin-Wook Kim

depletion over a short horizon.
