In response to growing investor questions around European payment sovereignty,
we examine the region’s two most prominent payment initiatives, Wero and the
Digital Euro, and quantify the smaller portions of revenue that could even be
contestable by these initiatives. In summary, we see a number of challenges for
local schemes and advantages for the global card networks, and view the likely
long-term outcome as a coexistence between international card networks
operating at scale (particularly for credit and cross-border) alongside a degree of
usage by alternative European payment schemes (including Wero and/or the Digital
Euro). Further, many European countries already have alternative payment systems
