Earthquake with a Maximum

Seismic Intensity of 7

On July 28, an earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity (shindo) of 7 on the

Auto Parts

Japanese scale hit Kumamoto Prefecture. At present, there have been no

Japan

announcements from the auto parts and tire companies under our coverage Industry View In-Line

regarding any impact on factory operations or other activities. Kumamoto Prefecture

is home to production sites for Aisin (body parts, engine parts), Bridgestone

(automotive hoses, high-pressure hoses), Nifco (plastic parts), and TS Tech

(motorcycle seats), among others, as well as a plant operated by JASM, a subsidiary

of TSMC in which Denso has an approximately 5.5% stake. Even if these sites have

not suffered direct damage, attention should be paid to any impact on parts

companies’ operations if supply-chain disruptions (e.g., interruptions to logistics or

energy, or production stoppages at other suppliers) affect production at vehicle and

motorcycle plants. When an earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of 7 hit

Kumamoto Prefecture on April 14, 2016, Aisin subsidiary Aisin Kyushu suffered

damage to equipment and substation facilities, and alternative production

arrangements were made. Production resumed in late August, and the impact of the

earthquake on F3/17 earnings (including equipment damage and restoration costs, as

well as the impact of production stoppages and cost of alternative production)
