We participated in the Japanese Association of Cardiovascular Intervention and tomoko.yoshihara@ubs.com

Therapeutics (CVIT) conference that was held 16-18 July. We visited related companies +81-3-5208 6212

including Terumo, Asahi Intecc, and Nipro. With the number of percutaneous coronary

intervention (PCI) cases trending broadly flat, there were many sessions on new fields

such as renal denervation and treatment of venous diseases. Japanese companies lag

behind European and US companies in launching proprietary products in new fields. We

anticipate proactive measures such as accelerating in-house product development and

acquisitions.

Terumo: Launching multiple new products developed in-house

Kanshas, a drug-coated balloon for lower limbs, was launched as a specialized device for

transradial intervention (TRI), a procedure involving insertion from the wrist. In Japan,

reimbursement under a new category for radial artery insertion-compatible devices and

a 10% premium were approved. With US companies leading the market, the company

is promoting differentiation through features not offered by competitors. In the

Japanese market, where TRI is preferred because it reduces the burden on healthcare

professionals, we think demand is high. In the lower-limb field, distal embolisation is an

issue, but the device is highly regarded for its low likelihood of embolisation due to a fine

coating called Unicoat.
