Czech Economics: Low Headline Inflation Masks Persistent Domestic Inflationary Pressures

Czech Economics

10 July 2026 Citi Research

Final inflation data confirmed the flash estimate, showing that headline inflation

slowed from 2.1% YoY in May to 1.5% YoY in June, while consumer prices declined

by 0.3% MoM. This was significantly below the Bloomberg market consensus as

well as the forecasts of both Citi and the CNB (see Sharp Drop in Headline Inflation

Leaves the CNB’s Monetary Policy Stance Unchanged). The sharp slowdown in

headline inflation was driven primarily by volatile components, particularly fuels

and food prices. Motor fuels made a particularly strong disinflationary contribution,

with prices falling by 8.1% MoM. In annual terms, motor fuel inflation slowed from

26.3% YoY in May to 14.9% YoY, compared with Citi's forecast of a more moderate

slowdown to 16.1%. As a result, their contribution to headline inflation almost

halved from May to around 0.5pp, significantly lowering overall inflation despite

their relatively small weight of roughly 3% in the consumer basket. Food, beverages

and tobacco prices also surprised markedly to the downside, with annual inflation

deepening from -0.4% YoY in May to -1.2% YoY. As in May, headline inflation in June

was also dampened by regulated prices, which declined by 1.5% YoY.

Overall, the final June data confirm that the sharp slowdown in headline

inflation was driven primarily by volatile components, whose disinflationary

impact is expected to fade gradually over the coming months. A weaker grain

harvest this year, together with the gradual stabilization of agricultural producer

prices, should return food prices to positive inflation territory during the second

half of the year (see Figure 1).
