A Sharp Turn in Narrative
Jun 2026
Industry summary
Copper structural supply tightness vs macro risks. Copper’s tight supply-demand fundamentals are amplified by ongoing US tariff
uncertainty, which has maintained a pull on seaborne tonnes. Against this backdrop, selectivity remains important at current valuation
levels. We prefer FQM for its superior growth prospects, positive catalyst path, and attractive valuation, as well as KGHM for valuation
support and precious-metals leverage. Within gold, Endeavour Mining remains preferred given its resilient FCF profile and capital
returns prospects.
Aluminium debate shifts from supply shock to pace of resumption. A potential resumption of trade flows in/out of the Middle East and
continued ramp-up of production at Indonesian smelters may continue to alleviate supply concerns, while falling energy prices are
gradually easing cost curve pressures. Although supply chain fragility would irreversibly drive a regionalisation of the aluminium market,
cyclically higher premiums would be hard to defend. Norsk Hydro’s advantaged cost position remains key, but growing aluminium price
risks and a fair valuation continue to underpin our Equal-Weight rating. Metlen also benefits from its low-cost, vertically integrated
aluminium smelting business, unhedged exposure to product premiums, and net long energy exposure.
Industry consolidation remains on offer. Low industry concentration in copper continues to highlight the sector’s lack of scale relative to
other mined commodities. Thin, long-dated project pipelines and elevated execution risk reinforce the case for buy over build as
companies seek long-life, high-quality resources.
