An excursion into ultrasonic gas metering

L+G management has dedicated various comments to the gas metering opportunity at An additional revenue driver

the June CMD and in recent news flow. For instance, L+G announced a partnership with

Australia-based Origin Energy to digitalize Australia's gas metering network over the

next 18 months. Also, the New York regulator approved L+G's Surent G480 ultrasonic

gas meter for use in NY, enabling National Grid and other operators to commence field

deployment.

We explored the topic with the use use of experts in AMI adoption (advanced metering

infrastructure) in gas.

In brief, ultrasonic gas meters use high-frequency sound waves to measure gas flow and Ultrasonic offers additional

travel time. Compared to traditional mechanical (diaphragm) meters that measure the functionality vs diaphragm...

volumes of gas going through the meter, these are completely solid state (i.e. no moving

parts). The additional sensors also allow for more functionality such as the measurement

of temperature or pressure.

According to experts, US AMI adoption in gas utilities is still in the early stages as utilities …but for now hard to justify full

struggle to justify the business case for full AMI deployment over AMR. In contrast to deployment

electricity meters which typically require a full meter replacement, gas (and water, for the

matter) can be retrofitted with communication modules.

Where there is a longer term growth opportunity driven by gas consumption related to

data centers (gas power plants), the revenue upside for gas meter suppliers is hence

more related to upselling higher-value products and software per end point, and not

necessarily tied to the number of metering end points.
