Gaps continue to exist in obesity care, and greater efforts are required to adequately address the unmet need,
especially as its prevalence grows and the costs continue to stack. The first step? Eliminating the stigma around
obesity and recognizing it as a chronic disease.
The treatment of obesity has evolved over the last decade. Despite the American Medical Association's recognition
of obesity as a chronic disease, gaps continue to persist in education, training, and access to effective therapies. The
standard of care for treating obesity has evidently shifted from older approaches like phentermine or bariatric surgery
to the very effective incretins (e.g., Zepbound, Wegovy). With the prevalence continuing to grow, clearer guidelines are
needed to align clinicians, researchers, policy makers, and others with how to properly treat and evaluate obesity. This
must first begin with eliminating weight stigma and bias. This is achievable through implementation of protocols that
minimize risk of stigmatization, ensure the availability of accommodating clinical equipment & furniture, and emphasize
person-centered & nonjudgmental language fostering collaboration.
Therefore, access must improve to efficiently deliver obesity care. As the conversation shifts, better ways of screening,
referring, and prescribing for obesity must evolve as well. The ADA expects 50% of the US population to be obese by
2030, and this is particularly important when considering its linkage to 200 other diseases. The annual economic impact
