Future of Flight
Looking into the future, GE sees 4 main themes: advanced/next gen propulsion systems, unscrewed propulsion,
hypersonics, and hybrid electric. The company's Edison Works business which is a specialized advanced technology
team of ~1400 across 5 sites, has the company well positioned for next generation propulsion with the XA102 adaptive
cycle engine (competing to power the F-47) which heavily leverages XA100 learnings. Additionally, Avio is a key player
on the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP) which is an international 6th gen fighter (development being funded by Italy,
UK, and Japan). The company's T901 (drop in upgrade of the ubiquitous T700/CT7) is a good example of what GE can
deliver by when combining D&S and P&AT as the engine's front frame is made through additive manufacturing which
helps improve the power and efficiency of the engine.
Uncrewed propulsion is really the company looking at propulsion systems more from an affordability perspective for
use in CCAs and cruise missiles which generally have limited life applications. The company has partnered with Kratos
on 2 smaller engines the GEK800 and GEK1500 while they have their own GE426 and F110 engines as options for
medium sized applications (the F110 is used on Shield AI's X-BAT). They see this market as being a $50B opportunity
market over the next 20 years.
The opportunity for hypersonics is still a ways out but that hasn't stopped GE from investing in the technology. They
have done flight tests of a solid fuel ramjet in 3Q25 and competed integration testing with LMT earlier this year. GE has
been able to leverage their high voltage expertise to in the development/production of hybrid-electric technology that
