Tour of MLCC plant: Fresh evidence of Murata's

strengths

Quick Note

Visit to Fukui Murata Manufacturing's Takefu plant: Main plant for cutting-edge products for

AI servers

We visited Fukui Murata Manufacturing's Takefu plant (first plant tour in 20 years). We visited

production lines in Building E, which was completed in 2023. The building is the only one of Fukui

Murata Manufacturing's 11 production buildings that carries out integrated production. It is mainly

responsible for the production of compact, high-capacitance multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs)

used for IT equipment, and is also a main production facility for cutting-edge products used for AI

data centers. After the tour, the company held a Q&A session with CEO Norio Nakajima and Nagato

Omori, head of the Ceramic Capacitor Business Unit.

Tour of production processes: Differentiating factor is integrated in-house development of

materials, equipment, and processes

During the tour, management emphasized the importance of integrated in-house production,

development, and procurement, including materials. The company has adopted a job shop

production setup that manages production by process function and brings together expertise in

order to handle high-mix production and reduce quality variability and defects. Developing its own

materials, production equipment, and processes allows the company to improve any issues

identified in processes by tracing them back to their roots. We think the reason why the company's

cutting edge products have higher effective electrostatic capacitance than rival products is that many

of these process improvements have combined to produce positive results (some of them have

been patented). The company said that in recent years, it has been working on DX projects that use

big data obtained during the processes to manage production parameters on a per-lot basis in order

to improve quality variability and yield. Many of the company's production facilities were designed

and manufactured in-house, and almost all the production lines we toured were designed by the

company.…
