Identifying trading opportunities around upcoming catalysts

We look for trading opportunities around upcoming catalysts in Figure 1 based on the following:

• Option markets at odds with Barclays: We look for catalysts where there is a material

inconsistency with the likely stock price impact priced in by option markets and Barclays

fundamental equity analysts' expectations, based on their published research; specifically,

catalysts that are priced as having lower (higher) impact by options markets than indicated

by comments published by Barclays fundamental equity analysts present opportunities to

buy (sell) volatility (Figure 2).

• Stretched sentiment: Stretched sentiment in either direction increases the risk of the

market being caught off guard in a surprise event, thereby exacerbating vol moves; we

therefore build a proprietary sentiment measure based on options flow (put-to-call open

interest and volatility skew) and technicals (short interest) of the stock (Figure 2).
