General merchandise spending eased vs. May 10 July 2026
Total retail spending (excluding gas) increased 4.6% in June, according to BAC Equity
aggregated credit and debit card data, compared to 4.3% in May. General merchandise United States
spending eased to +4.4% in June versus +5.5% in May however we note a pickup in Retailing - Hardlines and Broadlines
online general merchandise spend at the end of June (see inside for weekly trends) likely
given the shift in Amazon’s Prime Days (and other competitor sale periods) into June
compared to July last year. Grocery spending declined 0.8% in June from +1.5% in May.
