Earlier today, we published the first in a series of notes on the five Fed task forces Strategist

that Chair Warsh announced at the June meeting, starting with communications. +1-212-250-1741

We have already seen some changes under Warsh, including a revamp of the Steven Zeng, CFA

FOMC statement and a press conference in which the Chair avoided forward Strategist

guidance and was reluctant to go beyond the published statement in explaining +1-212-250-9373

the Committee’s thinking and the policy decision they reached.

seemingly light calendar of FOMC speakers since the June meeting.

To gauge the significance, if any, of this, the chart below looks at the number of Strategist

speeches/media appearances by FOMC participants over the two weeks +44-20-754-54017

following scheduled policy meetings. The count is based on Bloomberg’s

economic calendar, which though imperfect (e.g., no distinction between outlook Ioannis Sokos

Strategist speeches and introductory remarks) is still a good proxy. To facilitate comparison, +44-20-754-75680

we exclude post-December-meeting periods, which are characterized by very

light communications heading into the holidays and year-end. Markus Heider

As reflected in red, the number of speeches/appearances over the past two weeks +44-20-754-52167

has indeed been light by historical standards, though it does fall within the prior

range. It is worth noting that the historical periods with fewer speakers tended to Soniya Sadeesh
