late-August earnings commentary, as Nike's decision to end
distributors' online sales in 2027 could unintentionally intensify
industry discounting, while weak July demand suggests a soft
start to 2H26.

Rising risks in industry-wide discount: Nike's (NKE.N, US$42.63, NC) proactive
efforts to restore price discipline in China should support industry ASPs over the
longer term, but may unintentionally exacerbate e-commerce promotions in 2H26.
1) Likely channel response: We understand that Nike did not offer a comprehensive
package covering inventory takebacks or meaningful cuts to 2H26 shipments when
it notified distributors in late July that it would have to cease online sales as of
January 1, 2027. We note major distributors typically hold 20+% of inventory aged
>6 months at any point, while smaller distributors may have an even higher mix of
older stock. These distributors, which account for 65-70% of Nike China GMV, have
only ~5 months to sell through e-commerce, which represent 30-40% of their sales
and are a key high-turnover channel, per our estimates.
With limited time to resize inventory by year-end, promotional pressure on
distributors is likely to rise as each distributor knows that its peers face the same
deadline, increasing the incentive to discount early.
The July-August period is a seasonally quiet for e-commerce. The key window opens
in mid-late September, when merchants and platforms finalize their 11.11 promotion
plans. Unless Nike provides clear guidance on the treatment of unsold inventory, we
think distributors may have little choice but to become more aggressive in
