to expand its use of Facewatch facial recognition technology to more than 200 stores by

Christmas, increasing from the 55 stores currently using the system, reported The Grocer

yesterday. The retailer said the technology has helped reduce crime, with 92% of identified and

banned offenders not returning to stores. Sainsbury began trials in September 2025 and said

the system, which alerts staff when individuals suspected of previous criminal activity enter a

store, is used alongside human review processes, with every alert checked by trained colleagues
