No sign of following US; shift in international cooperation/division structure

On 19 June, as part of our Mizuho ESG+ seminar series we hosted a

presentation by Takahiro Ueno, senior researcher and research promotion

manager (sustainability) at the Central Research Institute of Electric Power

Industry, under the title Global landscape of climate change mitigation and

the path Japan should take: considering trends under the second Trump

administration. Mr. Ueno explained that while the US has adopted more anti-

climate change policies than anticipated, there has been no international

movement to follow suit, and the influence of the BRICS nations is conversely

expanding. He stated that Japan needs to maintain a balanced approach. We

summarize the main points of the presentation below.

Trump administration enacts more anti-climate change policies

than expected

The Trump administration announced its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement

in January 2025. While this move came as little surprise, mirroring actions
