Prudential plc: HK MCV concerns overdone, reiterate OW
UpdateMfeatures.
Key conclusion: The market appears to be extrapolating from HK investment
accounts to HK bank accounts, or does not fully understand the mechanics of MCV
insurance. The current tightening is aimed at investment accounts and non-
compliant cross-border securities activity. MCV insurance is usually funded through
a HK bank / savings account opened in HK, not through an investment account. As
we understand it, MCVs can still open HK bank accounts in HK and use them to fund
insurance premiums.
There is also broader concern that capital-control scrutiny eventually spills into
insurance. That is not our impression so far. The current actions look like
enforcement against unauthorised activity, while legitimate channels remain open
(which includes insurance).
In terms of demand, tougher access to HK investment accounts could make
insurance savings products more attractive for some customers, all else equal. On
the other hand, capital-control headlines could weigh on customer sentiment. We
would put a lower weight on this given the broader attractions of HK insurance
beyond offshore investment access.
What to do now? The stock reaction looks large relative to the evidence of direct
impact. Headlines are not helpful given how important HK is to the group. But
overall this is an impact to sentiment rather than evidence of economic impairment.
Fundamentally, Prudential is one of the few structural growth stories in our
coverage. It is now trading at 9.5x 2027e EPS, i.e. 2 turns lower than the European
insurance sector at 11.5x, but with a stronger earnings growth profile (double-digit
NBP growth). Therefore we continue to believe this is an attractive stock and
reiterate our Overweight rating.
