US Daily Data Recap "Waller backs removing easing bias" Wilcox

, 2040. Warsh's 4-year term as Chair expires

May 15, 2030. We wrote in last Friday's US Economics Weekly (link here) that Warsh

steps into a difficult environment for guiding policy, as he inherits inflation still above

target, energy prices pushing inflation higher, a labor market not all that strong, and

divergent views on the Committee.

Waller would support removing easing bias from statement

Speaking this morning Governor Waller added his name to the list of participants who

would support removing the easing bias from the statement, but said that raising rates

would be premature at this point. He outlined how the recent data on the labor market

and inflation led him to support holding rates at the April meeting and stated he "would

support removing the "easing bias" language in our policy statement to make it clear

that a rate cut is no more likely in the future than a rate increase."

In prepared remarks, he stated that he was "prepared to be patient in holding policy at

its current restrictive setting as we watch how the conflict evolves and what impact

there is on inflation and inflation expectations." He also went on to state that hikes at

this point would be "premature" but that if inflation expectations were to become

unanchored then he would not hesitate to support an increase in the policy rate.

In the Q&A, he elaborated on what would tip him toward supporting a rate hike, noting Governor Waller will be watching

that market-based measures of inflation expectations and how the inflation data market-based measures of inflation

progress would be key:"If I start seeing these shorter-run, two, three, four years out expectations and how the inflation

expectations, they're right about 2.5% right now.
