Ipsos: Jean Laurent Poitou's sudden departure leaves the market

Ipsos has just announced the departure of Jean Laurent Poitou and the appointment of Kelly Beaver as CEO. We have

reached out to the company, but most of our questions remain unanswered.

What is the narrative of the press release? Unlike the press release that accompanied Jean Laurent Poitou’s appointment, today’s

press release provides only limited information to explain Mr Poitou’s sudden departure. As a reminder, this departure comes: 1)

less than 15 days after the first-half results publication, presented in detail by Jean Laurent Poitou who showed no signs of any

disagreement with the board; 2) less than a year after the CMD, the presentation of the Horizon plan, and the implementation of a new

organizational structure.

What questions does this departure raise? Investors are likely to remain in the dark until Kelly Beaver’s scheduled presentation

to the markets on Monday, 14 September. In the meantime, there is no clarity on whether the medium-term targets of the Horizon

plan are being maintained. Ms Beaver has demonstrated solid experience in the UK market but will need to prove her ability to lead an

international organization facing significant transformation challenges. The new CEO will also need to win over the management team

recently reshaped by Jean Laurent Poitou.

Bernstein view. Governance risk has always been perceived as high at Ipsos, and this latest announcement only reinforces that view.
