Said to be aiming to acquire 100% stake for around ¥200bn Japan small cap - consumer
DiamondOnline reported on 29 July that Sony Group [6758] was proposing to acquire electronics
Tamron [7740]. According to the article, Sony Group aims to acquire all shares in Tamron Kosuke Hatanaka - NSC
at an acquisition price around ¥1,300 per share, for a total of around ¥200bn. Sony Group kosuke.hatanaka@nomura.com
+81 3 6703 1127submitted a non-binding proposal in January 2026. According to the report, Tamron has
also set up a special committee to discuss the acquisition proposal and appropriateness
of the price. Sony Group had a 15.35% stake in Tamron at end-December 2025.
Potential for collaboration in physical AI as well
While we have not confirmed the accuracy of the report, if true, we would expect this
move to strengthen Sony Group's imaging segment. Sony Group's entertainment,
technology & services (ET&S) segment is centered on the imaging business, with plans to
spin off its display business. We see strong affinities between Tamron's optical
technologies and Sony Group's, and in addition to lenses for mirrorless cameras and
surveillance/automotive cameras, we think collaboration could also eventually lead to
business expansion in areas related to physical AI.
Key partners for many years
Sony Group has long been an important business partner for Tamron. 52% of the
company's own-brand products are for Sony Group's E mount cameras (23 out of 44), and
