Impact of the July 28 Kumamoto Earthquake: On July 28, a magnitude 7.1
earthquake occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture. Among our consumer electronics and
semiconductor coverage, Sony Group and Renesas Electronics have manufacturing
facilities in Kumamoto.
Sony Group: Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing’s Kumamoto Technology Center
has suspended production activities since immediately after the earthquake and is
currently assessing damage to buildings and facilities. Meanwhile, there has been no
significant damage to buildings or facilities at its Nagasaki, Oita, and Kagoshima sites.
There were no injuries among employees working in the offices at the time of the
earthquake.
In the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, the semiconductor segment saw a negative
impact of approximately ¥28.0bn on FY3/17 operating profit, representing the net
amount after offsetting total physical losses and opportunity losses with insurance
proceeds received. In FY3/18, however, additional insurance proceeds of ¥6.7bn
became a positive factor for profit.
