the Earthquake
Within our semiconductor production equipment coverage, Tokyo Electron and
Ebara are the two companies with manufacturing sites in Kumamoto Prefecture.
Tokyo Electron operates plants producing coaters/developers, cleaning systems, and
advanced packaging equipment, while Ebara has a CMP manufacturing facility in the Semiconductor Production Equipment
Japan
prefecture. Industry View Attractive
Both companies have issued press releases, as shown in the links below. Following
the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, Tokyo Electron experienced production delays
and recorded ¥7.5bn in extraordinary losses related to machinery and equipment,
inventories, restoration costs for buildings, and various support measures. Today’s
share price decline may reflect concerns over similar risks.
We would expect some update from Tokyo Electron at its earnings briefing on July
30. However, in 2016, it took approximately one month after the earthquake for the
company to announce its expected extraordinary loss., suggesting that the full
extent of the impact may not yet be clear by July 30.
Tokyo Electron: Response to the earthquake occurred on July 28th in Kumamoto,
Japan (July 28)
Summary: No significant damage to buildings or equipment has been identified.
Operations at both sites will be suspended on July 29 for safety inspections.
Ebara: Response to the Kumamoto earthquake (1st report, text in Japanese) (July 29)
