projects and measures to expand the nation's electric transmission system.
• Australia proposes framework to fund clean energy through data centers (Platts). The Clean Energy Council released a
framework on July 23 to turn Australia’s rapidly expanding data center industry into a catalyst for billions of dollars in new electricity
investment. In a paper, the CEC outlines how data centers could help expand the nation’s electricity supply while protecting current
users. The CEC expects Australia’s data center sector to grow significantly in the coming decades. It projects that electricity demand
from data centers will rise from roughly 2% of National Electricity Market demand today to nearly 10% by 2050. Under the CEC’s
proposed Flexible Contracting Framework, the industry would be required to surrender Large-scale Generation Certificates and
Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin. The CEC said this would provide a temporary bridge for electricity consumption not yet
covered by data centers’ “on-the-build” renewable offtake arrangements.
