What you need to know:
Last Friday, Statistics Canada reported that Canada’s labour market showed minimal change•
in June, with employment up slightly (+18,000) and the unemployment rate declining to
6.5%. Gains among youth and core-aged workers were offset by losses among those aged
55+. Youth unemployment fell to 12.7%, while core-age rates were stable. Employment
rose in accommodation and food services but declined in manufacturing and other sectors.
Provincially, changes were limited, with Ontario steady at 7.0% unemployment. Wage growth
was 3.3% y/y. Overall, the labour market remained stable with modest gains, steady
participation, and ongoing differences across industries and age groups.
The Bank of Canada will issue its interest rate decision on Wednesday, while CMHC will release•
Housing Starts data on Thursday.
