European Equity Strategy: Pharma: the cleaner "what if not AI" trade
The defensive argument also had two near-term offsets. During the Iran conflict,
Pharma did not behave as defensively as expected partly because it had already been
bought, and partly because bond yields rose, which hurt defensive sectors more broadly.
Sector-specific news flow also worsened: Roche disappointed in breast cancer with
Persevera, Novo disappointed with REDEFINE-4 in GLP-1, and GSK delivered lacklustre
HIV data. That context matters because the current rally is not starting from
complacency. It follows a period where ownership, valuation and catalysts all reset.
The recovery is therefore more credible, but not riskless. Bond-yield stabilisation
has helped the sector, but a renewed yield backup would still challenge defensives. The
sector also remains exposed to clinical readout risk. The attraction today is that investors
are being paid to take more idiosyncratic Pharma risk than they were earlier this year,
with valuation lower and revisions beginning to improve.
GLP-1 is the strongest tactical catalyst
GLP-1 is now the highest-ranked theme in both the US and Europe in our
Themeometer, with a 0.4 score, positive revisions and positioning that is not especially
crowded. That matters for Europe because Novo Nordisk is one of the region’s most
important benchmark stocks and because the debate is shifting from price erosion to
reimbursed volume.
Novo has the classic ingredients of a tactical revision trade. The stock has de-rated
to around 12.5x 12m forward earnings, below where it traded when the GLP-1 theme
first accelerated, while earnings expectations have started to recover after a sharp
downgrade cycle. Several negatives have also eased: generic semaglutide competition
