Korea E-commerce: Where’s my egg cooker? Online shopping
reality check, Episode 2
On investor calls, the question always comes up: what does online shopping in Korea Min-Joo Kang
+852 2123 2644 actually feel like from a local’s perspective? We found ourselves thinking it might be worth
minjoo.kang@bernsteinsg.com writing this down - not as theory, but as lived experience. A few examples won’t capture
everything, but they reveal clear, real-world differences between Coupang and Naver.

That simple search turned into a deep dive across platforms and categories we actually
Charles Gou use. What stood out immediately: the exact same best-selling SKU on Coupang was listed
+852 2123 2618 at the same price on Naver (Link). But once you factor in Naver’s cash rewards, Naver was
charles.gou@bernsteinsg.com meaningfully cheaper. We ordered the same product on both platforms. The result? Both
arrived the next day - but Naver fulfillment lagged by about 6 hours. The trade-off is yours:
Hyrum Caesar c.$2 in rewards versus a half-day delivery edge. +81 3 6777 6979

Category wars: Who wins where. That night, I expanded the experiment - searching
for AirPods 3, Lululemon socks, Chanel lipstick, reusable dishcloths, kids’ tofu snacks,
bilberry juice, and a new Logitech mouse. Patterns emerged quickly. Apple products?
Coupang consistently wins on price. More people than expected buy new iPhones and
AirPods there - helped in part by the very forgiving return policy. Premium fashion and
beauty? Naver dominates.
