Last week, the Deutsche Bank Research Institute (DBRI) released a deep-dive

report entitled “Twenty Miles That Shook the World” on the Strait of Hormuz

(SoH). The report is an in-depth analysis of how the current situation in the SoH

is impacting eight sectors critical to the global economy, including shipping and

Last week, fragile peace conditions in the region broke down and it has been

reported that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has issued a warning that Iran could

escalate strikes against commercial shipping vessels in response to a US missile

attack on Iranian targets. The US launched a retaliatory strike on Iranian missile

and drone storage sites in response to an Iranian attack against a VLCC tanker

that was transiting the SoH on Saturday. Iran then targeted several US

infrastructure targets in Kuwait and in Bahrain. Additionally, Iran attacked an

Evergreen-operated containership last Thursday. The UK Maritime Trade

Operations organization said that “the maritime security threat level in the SoH

has increased to ‘SUBSTANTIAL’ following attacks on merchant vessels” and

that “mariners are advised on the existence of mines and should expect naval

presence as clearance operations continue. Despite the International Maritime

Organization pausing its evacuation plan in response to the latest attacks on

commercial vessels, several ships continue to try and pass through the SoH on a
