We met with Nubank management and institutional investors as part of our annual
Brazil fintech trip, and the discussion reinforced that the Nu debate is shifting from
customer acquisition to monetization, product mix, and international execution. The five
key takeaways from the meeting are:
1. Brazil credit growth remains primarily an existing-customer opportunity.
2. Secured lending should be viewed as an NPV and capital-efficiency opportunity
rather than a simple yield headwind.
3. Brazil ARPAC still has multiple levers across cohort maturation, super-core
segmentation, high income, and secured products.
4. Mexico is a structurally different opportunity where the banking license is the key
unlock for principality.
5. The U.S. remains a low-cost option on a large, profitable, but inefficient market.
Below we discuss the details behind these five points and why they matter for the
equity story.
1. Credit growth runway is still mostly inside the existing
customer base, not dependent on new customer acquisition.
The most important credit-growth message was that Nubank does not need new
customer acquisition to remain the primary driver of portfolio expansion. Management
framed the next phase of Brazil credit growth as "fishing in the current base," rather than
relying on the roughly one million monthly customer additions that continue to come into
the platform. Nubank has around 115 million customers in Brazil, about 100 million active
customers, and roughly 60 million primary banking relationships, but only around 40
million credit card customers and 14 million personal loan customers. That gap is the core
of the runway. The investment implication is that the debate should focus less on whether
