academic publishers are more important as researchers need a global trusted

platform that can provide a broader spread of credible international editors and peer

reviewers to maximise the impact and distribution of their work.

Technology/AI is a positive driver. Academic publishers must ingest large volumes

of highly technical data and process this efficiently and accurately, with technology

and systems in place to minimise risk and spot bad actors/fraud. We see limited

scope for open market LLMs to directly threaten this market given the need for

accuracy, trust and the danger of fraud.

Productivity and efficiency. Generative AI models build on automation and

extractive AI with SPG referencing c. 60 live AI assists within its platform and c. 50

under evaluation. SPG uses various inhouse systems such as the ARPI editorial

check system and SNAPP article processing system. ARPI automates editorial

quality/integrity checks pre peer review, saving time for editors and reviewers. The

SNAPP platform processes and uses AI tools to help researchers gain better insight

across the whole workflow and publishing process. SPG references strong

customer satisfaction (authors, editors and reviewers) with improvements in speed

of turnaround from submission to publication, though the process still can take

some time (SPG references 200-300 days depending on the publication). Half of

journals are now on SNAPP with ability to roll this out further and add additional

services. SPG also highlights its article transfer recommendation system (T-Rex)

that offers instant transfer recommendations to alternative SPG journals for
