To maintain JEF’s leadership in the debate on Europe’s accelerating energy

transition, we are hosting a session with ArcelorMittal, a global steel leader

at the centre of low-carbon infrastructure buildout. We are joined by Victoria

Irving, ESG IR manager, to discuss how steel underpins electrification,

renewables, & industrial decarbonisation - and how MT is positioning to

Background: Steel is essential for decarbonisation, and it is the backbone material for many

of the technologies and infrastructure needed to reduce global emissions, including wind

turbines, solar farms, electricity transmission grids, electric vehicles, rail networks, hydrogen

pipelines, heat pumps, and low-carbon buildings. Its strength, durability, recyclability, and cost-

effectiveness make it difficult to replace at scale, especially in energy, transport, construction,

and industrial systems.

While steel production itself is a source of CO2 emissions (c8% of global emissions with every

1mT of steel producing 2mT of CO2, under the older blast furnace route). Decarbonising the

steel sector through recycling, electric arc furnaces (EAFs), green hydrogen, carbon capture,

and cleaner power is critical because demand for steel will remain high as economies build

out low-carbon infrastructure. The energy transition depends on steel, and achieving net-zero

depends on making steel greener.
