Tools AlphaSense Expert Insights: Views Across

the Channel

We synthesize insights from AlphaSense expert transcripts over the past

few weeks across the tools space. This time around, we share several key

takeaways for AVTR, WAT, and TMO.

AVTR (former Senior VP of Global Commercial Operations). 1. J.T. Baker. The spec'd-in

positioning remains meaningful with >80% of revenues tied to formulations for which AVTR

products are named in regulatory filings, but this does not confer permanent lock-in, given

the commodity-like nature of many chemicals. Unlike critical inputs (resins, media, cell lines),

these products can be re-qualified and swapped, particularly amid pricing gaps (certain chemicals

priced 20-25% above market) driving share losses to competitors such as Cytiva, Morton and

others; 2. Masterflex. Execution missteps highlight broader portfolio challenges, with the asset

acquired at peak valuation despite limited strategic fit as a non-critical bioprocess component.

Underinvestment in Masterflex is evident with a minimal marketing presence (vs Watson-Marlow

at trade shows) and weak sales incentives (reps prioritizing $3-4M chemical batches over $10K

pumps); and 3. Strategic interest. Expert feedback suggests mixed strategic interest, with NuSil

the most attractive business given higher-margin, niche positioning, while J.T. Baker and Masterflex

appear less compelling as standalones.

WAT (Strategy & Innovation Marketing Director at BIM). 1. WAT acquisition. Expert believes that

WAT can achieve MSD+ growth for microbiology and incremental placements (100/year) given

the sizeable replacement opportunity (12k BACTEC units).
