Tesco: Defensive despite the weather

her conditions and disruption at certain competitors, both of which provide a meaningful boost

to sales and market share last year. Sales, profit, and cash flow all developed broadly in line with internal expectations,

suggesting no deterioration in underlying trading or the competitive environment. The company continues to invest heavily

in price, quality, and service to maintain their record customer satisfaction scores. Although market share gains softened

slightly in the most recent four-week period, this appears largely attributable to last year’s exceptional gains rather than a

change in competitive positioning.

• Consumer confidence remains weak, but spending behavior is holding up, reflecting ongoing geopolitical uncertainty

and a challenging macroeconomic backdrop. Management attest to seeing little evidence that weaker sentiment has

translated into materially different spending behavior. Consumer purchasing patterns have remained broadly stable since

last autumn, with a particularly strong performance in Fresh Food volumes. Premium demand also remains healthy, with

Tesco finest sales growing 9% despite tougher comps.

• Basket consolidation remains a supportive trend, with customers increasingly concentrating their spending

with trusted retailers. Industry volumes remain under pressure, but Tesco appears to be outperforming the broader

market, particularly with fresh categories. Management noted that neither the conflict in the Middle East nor domestic

political uncertainty has meaningfully altered customer behavior to date. Tesco continues to benefit from resilient demand

and remains well positioned in terms of inflationary pressures, price positioning, and strong private label offerings.
