Recycling, Redeployment and a Clearer TSR Framework

Investment Summary
In our initiation report last month (see link here), our investment thesis on Jardine
was that the market was underestimating the group-level transformation: unlisted
assets were being valued too cheaply, shareholder returns were becoming more
central to capital allocation, and Jardine’s diversified Asian portfolio gave it
multiple ways to compound value. The inaugural investor day reinforces this view.
Rather than announcing a completely new strategy, management provided clearer
goalposts and a more concrete execution framework for the direction already
visible through portfolio simplification, capital recycling, buybacks, dividend
growth, governance improvement, and disciplined reinvestment into scalable
platforms. We think this strengthens the case that Jardine is moving from a passive
holding-company model toward a more active, TSR-led capital allocator.
Updates to our thesis (1) “unlisted assets trading at zero value”: Investor day provided
further indication that Jardine’s private assets have meaningful value and growth
optionality. Mandarin Oriental is increasingly positioned as a capital-light, brand-led luxury
hospitality platform, with management fees, branded residences, and asset recycling
expected to drive higher-quality earnings and returns over time. At the same time, Jardine
Engineering & Infrastructure, within Jardine Pacific, is being repositioned from a project-led
engineering business to a more balanced engineering and investment platform with higher
recurring income, regional expansion, and buy-and-build M&A potential. These updates
support our view that the market is under-appreciating the earnings quality and growth
potential embedded in Jardine’s unlisted portfolio.
