Mythos 5 was only available to companies participating in the Project Glasswing initiative

being promoted by Anthropic (including Hitachi and Trend Micro in Japan), and was

scheduled to be used to enhance cybersecurity. Fable 5 is the same as Mythos 5 aside

from safeguards put in place to make it safe for the public. On 12 June (local time), three

days after the launch, the US government ordered Anthropic to suspend access to Mythos

5 and Fable 5 by any foreign nationals inside or outside the US, including foreign national

Anthropic employees, citing national security concerns. As a result, Anthropic disabled the

Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers.

The restrictions on these large language models were reportedly implemented because of

the possibility of a jailbreak (ie, a way around the safeguards in Fable 5), and if this ban is

not viewed as a one-off, it could have a chilling effect on AI-related sentiment, as echoed

in the statement released by Anthropic, "If this standard was applied across the industry,

we believe it would essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model

providers." We also see a risk that companies' stances on the adoption of AI services from
