Bilateral deals likely to be negotiated alongside continental trade pact: LeBlanc (The Canadian
Press) Yesterday, The Canadian Press reported that Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc expects
bilateral agreements between Canada and the United States, and between the U.S. and Mexico, to
be negotiated alongside discussions on the broader Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). This
comes as U.S. President Donald Trump signaled he is not inclined to renew the pact ahead of a
July 1 deadline for a 16-year extension. LeBlanc indicated that bilateral deals could help resolve key
issues and support a broader extension of the trilateral framework. While the U.S. could withdraw
with six months’ notice, current indications suggest this is not imminent, and the agreement could
remain subject to annual review for up to 10 years. U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra emphasized
that despite Trump’s rhetoric, the U.S. still has significant needs that Canada can fulfill, encouraging
Canada to take an assertive negotiating stance. Key sectors highlighted include potash, energy, and
autos, where Canada is seen as a reliable supplier. Meanwhile, U.S. officials are considering broader
tariff measures, including a potential additional 10% levy tied to forced labour enforcement concerns.
Canada is responding with legislative measures to strengthen its regime, while continuing to face
existing tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos.
Ottawa aims to cut grocery bills with $3.2B food security strategy (Global News) Yesterday, Global
News reported that the federal government unveiled a $3.2B national food security strategy to lower
grocery bills by reshaping Canada’s food system and reducing reliance on imports.
