Enterprise Structure Drives Multi-Program Exposure, But Discussions Remain Focused on
Earlier-Stage Assets
A key differentiator for today's announcement versus a traditional SPL is the breadth of program
exposure. Management indicated that beyond the two existing Ph1 programs, the agreement
is intended to support future preclinical cell therapy programs across Genentech’s portfolio,
allowing Genentech to utilize MaxCyte’s platform without conducting technology evaluations on
a program-by-program basis. Importantly, management noted that displacement opportunities
are generally most feasible during preclinical development and Ph1, while displacement
becomes more difficult in later-stage settings. As a result, we think the agreement (and any
potential deals using a similar approach) will likely focus on existing early clinical programs and
future preclinical assets rather than more mature development-stage programs.
Breadth Of Platform Was Instrumental To Winning The Business
Beyond electroporation, management highlighted MaxCyte’s expanded technology portfolio
as an important factor in securing the agreement. The partnership includes access to multiple
electroporation systems, analytical offerings, and SeQure Dx capabilities. Management noted
that Genentech was seeking a platform partner rather than a product supplier and specifically
cited the breadth of MaxCyte’s portfolio, scientific support infrastructure, and analytical
capabilities as differentiating factors. We believe this reinforces the strategic rationale behind
MaxCyte’s investments in recent years to build a more comprehensive cell engineering platform
